Chasing Wild [Short Film | 12 minutes]

Three friends set off on a 400km bikepacking and packraft expedition through the heart of the sacred headwaters in northwestern British Columbia, birthplace of three critical salmon rivers, and home to the Tahltan people. In the wake of the devastating Mount Polley Mine disaster, the team’s goal is to understand what is at stake as a wave of new mines are developed across this remote corner of the province. Their journey offers an exciting and sobering window into this wild landscape as they pedal through vast boreal forest, paddle through frigid whitewater, catch monster trout, outrun a hungry grizzly, learn about the Tahltan’s fight to protect their homeland and glimpse inside a massive open pit mine.

Protect the Transboundary Rivers

The Issue

In Northwest British Columbia, a modern-day gold rush is underway that could threaten Southeast Alaska’s salmon, rivers, fishing and tourism jobs, and unique way of life. Spurred by weakened environmental protections and the construction of a massive new power line, at least ten large-scale mines are in some stage of advanced exploration, environmental review, permitting or operation in this region that is quickly becoming one of the largest mining districts in the world.

The future of these rivers depends on citizens taking action on local, national and international levels. Join us in working towards a bright and just future for all people and creatures of this magnificent ecosystem. Below are links to organizations doing important work for these watersheds.

Klabona Keepers - An organization of Tahltan elders and families who occupy and use traditional lands near Iskut, British Columbia known as Tl’abāne, the Sacred Headwaters of the Stikine, Nass and Skeena Rivers.

Skeena Watershed Conservation Coalition - Founded in 2004 by a diverse group of people living and working in the Skeena River watershed. Our board of directors and membership reflects the broad interests of the people in this region.

Southeast Alaska Conservation Council - For 47 years SEACC has been Southeast Alaska's grassroots voice in conservation. We work to protect the Tongass National Forest, Inside Passage, and our unique Southeast Alaska way of life.
